UWI Carnival ends on a high note
UWI Carnival 2017 concluded on a high note Sunday night at annual Beach Party.
The four-day affair kicked off at Integration Thursday, which aided in building the momentum for what was an energetic weekend of events. Getting the weekend rolling was the annual J'ouvert party, held at the UWI Sand pit. Paint, powder, foam, and lots of water were definitely the order of the night for the large crowd of carnival revellers.
Saturday's Road March was nothing short of a spectacle. Unlike last year, the organisers went all out to reintroduce actual costumes. Several ladies were spotted wearing their various costumes palancing, even as the clouds often threatened to rain on the parade — literally.
Despite the inclement weather, patrons did not shy away from the challenge as they danced in the showers. Female revellers had their make-up smudged as a result of the water, however they still danced up a storm without concern.
Plastic bags became an asset to revellers as a means of protecting their cell phones. Some vendors took advantage of the moment by selling a plastic bag for as much as $100.
The Road March usually occupies all the major routes on the Mona campus, and this year was no different.
Campus-based disc jocks like DJ Jinx, DJ Rubba, Hypnosis Sound, DJ Bukka and Transformahz Sound had their home audience's full attention as they went for popular songs known to get UWI students riled up. There was also juggling by DJ Sanjay, DJ Nicco and others.
Speaking of music, the 2017 batch of soca songs showed improvement from last year. Songs like Rock and Come In, Bicycle Ride by Bunji Garlin and Vybz Kartel and Charly Black's Gyal You A Party Animal had patrons in a frenzy.
