73-y-o woman dies in Greater Portmore house fire

The lifeless body of 73-year-old Sonya Ebanks was discovered among the rubble of her home in Greater Portmore, St. Catherine, after a fire of unknown origin gutted the dwelling late Wednesday night.

According to reports, the Portmore Fire Brigade responded to the blaze at approximately 9:20 p.m. on October 29, 2025. After extinguishing the flames, Ebanks' body was found during the post-fire cooling operation.

Authorities from the Portmore St. Catherine division have launched an investigation into the incident, treating it as a suspected case of death by fire. The Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is leading the probe.

The estimated value of the home and its contents has not yet been determined.
